Food Donation Programs
When we first examined how to tackle food deserts, we realized that what was most important, at least in the preliminary phase, was to attempt to provide immediate relief. Thus, we decided to host monthly food drives. For each drive we raise as much money as we can, averaging $350 a month, and buy as much produce as possible. After, we distribute it into paper grocery bags. We make sure that everything we put in the bags can be used to make a healthy balanced meal: nothing goes to waste. Each grocery bag can feed four people, but the amount of bags we give to each family depends on the members (i.e. a family of 8 would receive 2 bags whereas a family of 2 would receive 1 bag).
We also have held our Sponsorship Program, in which we provide monthly groceries to a chosen family in need at no cost to them. After applying to be a recipient, the chosen household filled out preference forms and our team compiled a month’s worth of groceries to match! These were hand delivered each month for 3-6 months, based on program funding.
Historically, food programs have been held in Parramore, a district in Orlando, Florida and will expand in 2024. Our food drives are held at whatever establishment is kind enough to host us, whether that be CVS or 7/11, and we give until we run out of produce.
